Two scholars, read through the array

Two of the profiles in the report, with the percentiles recorded for each scholar. The wheel gives the shape of a career at a glance; the table underneath is the same reading as numbers, in the order the report gives them.

01 The profiles

Eight values, five audiences, one shape each

Every spoke runs the full radius. The plotted point on it is the scholar's percentile against others in the same subject, so the outline is a comparison rather than a score.

Percentile among scholars in the same Subject within the supplied HKBU corpus. Category score = equal-weight mean percentile of available mapped indicators. Values use Handbook Table 1; audiences use Handbook Table 2 only.

02 The numbers

The same reading, axis by axis

The wheel is easier to take in; the table is what you check it against. The bar in each cell is drawn to the same scale for every row, so a 100 and a 24 are visibly different rather than merely stated.

Both scholars are professors. Neither profile is an assessment of them, and no figure here was chosen to make a point: they are the percentiles the report recorded.

03 What these numbers are not

A percentile is a position, not a verdict

Read the shape, not the rank

A low percentile on one axis says that the evidence for it is thin in the corpus, not that the scholarship is thin. A scholar whose work is public-facing will show a strong Publics axis and a modest Students axis; another who teaches heavily will show the reverse. Neither reading is a ranking of the person.

The comparison group is narrow

Every figure is a percentile among scholars in the same subject within one institution's corpus. Move the peer group and the numbers move with it. That is the point of the array — it makes the comparison explicit rather than hiding it inside a single number.

Where the evidence was thin

Where a class has no agreed indicator yet, or no available data source, it contributes nothing to the category score rather than contributing a zero. The framework shows exactly which tiles those are — they are marked as still to be developed.
